Recent Projects
Management writing and editing
I’ve been writing about all aspects of managing small businesses for almost two decades. That’s included general management advice, specialist guidance for different industries, topical articles and internal guidance for bank and business support staff.
Much of this work has been for/through specialist publishing company BHP. Clients have included the various incarnations of national and local business support organisations, Microsoft, HSBC and various law firms.
Copywriting
I’ve worked on both direct marketing copy and indirect collateral (eg white papers for technology businesses). More unusual projects have included translating from American into English (a piece on outsourcing, for Gartner). Making complex products and services interesting to a non-technical audience is a speciality.
Editorial and information architecture
As well as copy-editing, I’ve helped establish editorial guidelines for new products, support freelance writers and so on.
Over the years, I’ve moved further up the information food chain, helping to plan information architecture for knowledge banks and other websites. Feel free to have a look at some sites [link] I’ve worked on.
Business management/consultancy
I’ve set up a couple of small companies, a small training venture and a bar/restaurant (profitably sold). I’ve also been an adviser to a number of new (in some cases embryonic) businesses, from helping develop business plans to providing ongoing support.
My role as a consultant is typically to challenge management’s plans, using my experience and knowledge of other businesses to offer constructive criticism and suggest ways to take the business forward.
Costs
I’m pretty flexible about how I charge – hourly, fixed rate or success fee are all options. In terms of a day rate, overall costs tend to work out somewhere in the £300-£700 range.
